Historical novels don』t get much better than those composed by Margaret George. 10. Continue dipping until the candles are the desired diameter; 7/8 inch (22 mm) is the most common. Replenish the wax as necessary to maintain a sufficient level for submersion. If the bases are elongated by drips or are uneven as you approach the finished size, trim with a knife and proceed with the last few dips. The dips will round over the bases, giving them a nice shape.

11. Some candlemakers raise the temperature of the wax to 180-200° F (82°-93° C) for the last 2 or 3 dips to improve layer adhesion. Some increase the amount of stearic acid for these dips or use wax with a higher melting point. If you have the proper ratio of wax to stearic acid to begin with, this shouldn』t be necessary.

12. If you want a shiny surface on your candles, dip them into cool water immediately after the last dip. Hang the candles on a hook or peg for at

least an hour to cool further, then store flat and out of direct sunlight.

「Bilious」 is one of several words whose origins trace to the old belief that four bodily humors (black bile, yellow bile, phlegm, and blood) control temperament. Like 「sanguine」 (a blood-based disposition), 「phlegmatic」 (a phlegm-driven character), and 「melancholy」 (associated with black bile), 「bilious」 describes a personality associated with an excess of one of the humors—in this case, yellow bile. It derives ultimately from bilis, Latin for 「bile,」 and has been used since the 1500s in English to refer to things related to bile (the fluid secreted by the liver), as well as to the sort of temperament once thought to be bile-generated. In the past, bile was also called choler, which gives us the adjective 「choleric,」 a synonym of 「bilious.」
