demulcent
adj : soothing
The lozenges had a demulcent effect, and my sore throat was soon giving me far less trouble.

DID YOU KNOW?
「Demulcent」 derives from the Latin verb demulcēre, meaning 「to soothe,」 which added the prefix de- to the earlier verb mulcēre, also meaning 「to soothe.」 As an adjective, 「demulcent」 often applies to the soothing nature of medicines, but you can use it more broadly to describe things like a soothing melody or a soothing demeanor. The noun 「demulcent」 is used for a gelatinous or oily substance that is capable of soothing inflamed or abraded mucous membranes and protecting them from further irritation.

ON MAUGHAM

「The modern writer who has influenced me the most.」—George Orwell

「One of my favorite writers.」—Gabriel Garcia Marquez

「A writer of great dedication.」—Graham Greene

Maugham's novel follows the obsessions of an English banker who runs off to Tahiti to live as an artist, leaving the lives of those closest to him in ruins. Based on the biography of painter Paul Gauguin, The Moon and Sixpence is a master's rumination on the destructive nature of genius. If you've never read Maugham, now's the time.
THE MOON AND SIXPENCE, by W. Somerset Maugham (1919; Penguin, 1993)

Blanche: My Little Billy is so smart.

Mrs. Treemont: Why do you say that?

Blanche: Because over the weekend he finished three books!

Mrs. Treemont: Wow, that』s impressive!

Blanche: And he was only one page away from finishing a fourth!

Mrs. Treemont: Remarkable! Why did he stop?

Blanche: He ran out of crayons.

Bright Idea

Power failures due to snowstorms, sleet, hurricanes, and other natural disasters are often preceded by a warning. In such cases, heat stews, soups, beans, spaghetti, and other one-pot meals and pour them into insulated Thermos bottles, where they will keep warm for up to twelve hours.

It's also a good idea to store as much water as possible. Fill your washing machine, sinks, bathtub, and any clean containers. Buckets, dishpans, empty soda bottles, barrels, large pots, plastic storage bins, and even sturdy plastic bags can be used to hold water for a few days.

If the outage is weather related, you may have access to unlimited water supplies (snow in the North and rain in the South). Use this water for sanitation, or purify for drinking.
