由於《數學:確定性的失落》書中所涵蓋的時間很長,涉及的範圍很廣,我們在翻譯時做了一些查證和比對的工作。受限於篇幅,其中有些資料無法放入書中,但應該會對讀者閱讀有所幫助,或者可節省讀者自行查閱的時間,所以我們把這些資料補充在這裡,以供參考。
翻譯說明 |
本書的翻譯分工,第八至十五章由翁秉仁負責,其他部分由趙學信負責,翻譯後再由兩人彼此複閱。另外,翁秉仁負責數學部分之審定,趙學信則統一處理文字風格的部分。我們儘可能不加非必要的譯註。
幾點值得提醒讀者的要點:

數學家克萊恩(Felix Klein)與作者克萊因(Morris Kline)是不同的兩個人,書中正文數度提及的是前者。

由於本書內容跨越兩千餘年,axiom一詞我們統一譯成比較現代意義的「公設」,而不用「公理」。另外培根經常使用的axiom一詞,因為意義不同,所以別譯為「原理」,並附原文提醒。

古代思想家的引文,許多都牽涉到翻譯版本和詮釋的問題,我們儘可能以蒐集到的材料,在不違反克萊因的理解下,參酌翻譯。
- 由於作者本意在為一般大眾而寫,因此在第八章到第十二章這些多少涉及數理邏輯的章節裡,由於數理邏輯的技術性術語較多,作者有時會做一些簡化的改寫,其本 意在保存口語的習慣和數學、歷史的脈絡,但是從數理邏輯的眼光來看,可能不夠精確和完善,這是讀者在閱讀時必須小心的地方。
